Problem gambling is a behavioral disorder with measurable neuropharmacological components. The brain's dopaminergic reward pathway becomes desensitized to normal stimuli and hypersensitized to gambling stimuli. The person loses control over the behavior. Therefore, treatment should follow a clinical model, not a moral one.

Three organizations in the UK serve this function:

GamCare

GamCare was founded in 1998 and operates as a registered charity. It provides free counseling via telephone (0808 800 4000) and online chat. Counselors are trained specifically in problem gambling, not general addiction counseling. The difference is important. Problem gambling involves cognitive distortions unique to gambling (illusion of control, near-miss effect, chasing losses) that require specific knowledge to address.

GamCare also offers face-to-face counseling at locations across the UK. Sessions are free for the first twenty appointments. The service is funded by gaming operators through the Gambling Commission's levy, not by government. This creates a conflict of interest that is worth noting: operators fund the treatment for the harms their products cause. GamCare maintains independence through regulatory oversight, but the funding structure is worth understanding.

The National Council for Problem Gambling (2019) studied GamCare's outcomes and found that 73% of clients who completed treatment reported significant reductions in gambling frequency. The study controlled for motivation at intake, so this represents genuine behavioral change.

Gambling Therapy

Gambling Therapy is a digital platform offering self-assessment tools, guided self-help programs, and counselor-led therapy sessions. The self-assessment measures three dimensions: frequency of gambling, money spent, and perceived loss of control. These three variables are the diagnostic criteria for problem gambling in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders).

The platform offers both synchronous (real-time chat with a counselor) and asynchronous (self-directed) treatment. The asynchronous option uses cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) principles: identifying triggers, understanding the function the behavior serves, and developing alternatives.

Expectancy and Cognitive Biases (Ladouceur & Dubé, 2021) found that CBT-based treatment reduced erroneous gambling expectancies (the belief that the person can predict outcomes) by an average of 47% over a six-week program. This is a measurable change in how the person thinks about gambling, not just how often they gamble.

BeGambleAware

BeGambleAware is a public health campaign and support organization that runs alongside the UKGC (UK Gambling Commission) but maintains independence. It publishes research on gambling harm prevalence and best practices for treatment. It also offers direct support through a helpline and online resources.

Unlike GamCare and Gambling Therapy, BeGambleAware focuses on population-level prevention as much as individual treatment. It funds research into problem gambling's epidemiology. Its recent work (2022) estimated that 1.9% of UK adults meet criteria for problem gambling, and an additional 4.3% are at-risk (displaying two of three diagnostic criteria).

These organizations are not punishment. They are clinical infrastructure treating a neurobehavioral disorder.

The Contact Information

GamCare: 0808 800 4000 or gamcare.org.uk Gambling Therapy: gamblingtherapy.org or telephone 0808 800 8080 BeGambleAware: begambleaware.org or 0808 801 0011

All three services are free and confidential. None report to gambling operators or law enforcement. The person seeking help maintains privacy.

The mathematics of problem gambling are straightforward. A person who gambles a EUR 1000 per month and has a 96% RTP slot experience loses EUR 40 per month to the house edge. A person with problem gambling might wager EUR 5000 per month and experience distress proportional to losses. The harm is not the mathematics. The harm is the loss of control.

Therefore, treatment should address the loss of control, not the mathematics. These three organizations do this work.
