Casino Cashback Bonus: How Refunds Are Calculated
Cashback pays on net loss, not total wagers. How the loss window, caps, excluded games and 1x playthrough set what a refund is actually worth.

A casino cashback bonus returns a share of what a player lost over a set period, and at the US operators that publish their terms, "lost" means net loss: cash wagered minus cash won, not the total amount staked. The refund usually arrives as bonus credit rather than withdrawable cash, with a cap, a deadline and sometimes a playthrough. Those terms, more than the headline percentage, decide what the offer is worth.
How is casino cashback calculated?
Cashback is calculated on net loss over a fixed window, not on the amount wagered. A player who ends the period ahead gets nothing back.
Hard Rock Bet's lossback terms define net cash loss as total cash wagered minus total cash wins, measured over a 24-hour period (as of October 2026). FanDuel applies the same arithmetic weekly. FanDuel's getting-started guide gives a worked case: $90 in real-money wagers minus $50 in winnings is a $40 net loss, and at Level 2 the 10% rate returns $4.
The size of the bankroll cycled through the games does not enter the formula. Only the gap between cash in and cash out does. That is why cashback rewards a losing period rather than volume of play, which separates it from comp points and other wager-based rewards.
| Term | Hard Rock Bet lossback | FanDuel weekly Bonus Back |
|---|---|---|
| Loss measure | Cash wagered minus cash wins | Real-money net loss |
| Period | 24 hours | One week |
| Rate | 100% | Tier-based (10% at Level 2) |
| Cap | $1,000 | Not stated in the guide |
| Bonus-funded wagers | Excluded | Excluded |
| Paid as | Casino Bonus, 1x wagering within 14 days | Casino Bonus |
Terms as published and accessed in October 2026.
What counts toward the loss, and what shrinks it
Eligible wagers are narrower than "all casino play," and some wins count against the loss even when the matching stake does not. Both effects shrink the refund.
- Eligible games. At Hard Rock Bet, only cash slot wagers count. Table games, video poker, live dealer games and wagers placed with bonus funds are excluded.
- Bonus funds. FanDuel likewise states that Casino Bonuses and Bonus Spins don't count toward the weekly net loss.
- Free-spin winnings. Hard Rock Bet factors bonus-spin cash winnings into the calculation, although bonus-spin wagers are not counted. A free-spin win therefore lowers the refundable loss with no stake on the other side of the formula.
- Minimum activity. Hard Rock Bet requires at least 10 separate wagers, and no single wager may account for more than 50% of the total net cash loss. One large losing bet cannot qualify on its own.
Caps, periods and deadlines on a cashback bonus
The percentage sets the rate; the cap sets the ceiling. Above the cap, further losses earn nothing.
Hard Rock Bet pays 100% of net cash losses up to $1,000 as a Casino Bonus, credited within 30 minutes of the 24-hour period ending. FanDuel's new-customer Play It Again refund covers net losses in the first 24 hours of casino play, up to $1,000, paid as non-withdrawable Casino Bonus within 72 hours of the period ending. That bonus expires 7 days after receipt (as of October 2026).
Three clocks run in sequence: the loss window, the crediting delay and the expiry or wagering deadline on the refund itself.
Is a cashback casino bonus paid in real money?
Sometimes. Some offers pay cash with no playthrough; others pay bonus credit that has to be wagered before anything can be withdrawn.
Legal Sports Report lists cash refunds on a net loss during a promotional period as an example of a bonus with no playthrough. Its examples, accessed October 2026:
| Operator | Refund | Period | Form |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bally's | Up to $500 of net loss | First seven days | Cash refund, no playthrough |
| Virgin Casino | Up to $100 of net loss | After one week | Cash refund, no wagering requirement |
| Hard Rock Bet | Up to $1,000 | 24 hours | Casino Bonus, 1x wagering |
| FanDuel Play It Again | Up to $1,000 | First 24 hours | Non-withdrawable Casino Bonus |
Hard Rock Bet's refund carries a 1x wagering requirement within 14 days of activation. Unused bonus funds and any winnings from them are forfeited after that.
What the terms do to a cashback bonus's real value
Start from the published formula, not the promo headline. The refund equals the rate times the eligible net loss, limited by the cap. Then adjust for its form:
- Cash with no playthrough is worth its face amount once paid, as in the Virgin Casino refund terms.
- Bonus credit with playthrough is worth less than face. It must be wagered before withdrawal, the result of that play is uncertain, and it lapses at the deadline.
- Tiered rates tie the percentage to loyalty status. FanDuel's weekly Bonus Back returns a percentage of the week's net loss that depends on the player's level, which links cashback to VIP and loyalty programs.
Cashback reduces a loss after the fact. It does not turn a losing period into a winning one, and it pays nothing in a period that ends ahead.
Before claiming an offer, check these terms in the operator's own rules:
- How the loss is defined (net cash loss or something else)
- Which games and which funds count
- The loss window and when the refund is credited
- The rate and the cap
- Whether the refund is cash or bonus credit
- Any wagering requirement and its deadline
- Minimum-activity rules on number and size of wagers
Quick answers
Is cashback real money?
It depends on the offer. Some refunds are cash with no wagering requirement; others, such as FanDuel's Play It Again, are paid as non-withdrawable Casino Bonus that must be played before any withdrawal.
How does casino cashback actually work?
The operator takes eligible cash wagers minus cash wins over a set period. If that figure is a loss, it refunds a percentage of it, up to a cap, usually as bonus credit.
What is the catch with cashback?
The refund is often bonus credit with a playthrough and an expiry date, the cap limits it, and excluded games or bonus-spin winnings can shrink the loss it is based on.
Does cashback mean free money?
No. It only pays after a net loss and returns part of that loss, so the player is still down for the period.
