First Time in a Casino Poker Room: A Step-by-Step Guide

Listen, I'm gonna tell you how this works because half the people who walk in for the first time look completely lost and I don't wanna see that happen to you.

1. Bring Your ID and Cash

You're not getting past the door without real identification. Driver's license or passport. The guy at the podium doesn't care about your experience. He cares that you're legally allowed to be there.

Bring cash. Real cash. Yeah, you can buy chips with a card usually, but bring cash anyway. Bring what you can afford to lose in one night and expect to lose it. That's the deal.

2. Get on the List

Walk to the podium and say: "I want to play Hold'em." They write your name down. You sit. It takes twenty minutes, sometimes two hours. While you wait, watch the tables. Watch how the cards move. Watch where the button is. Watch the chips. Red usually means five. Green means twenty-five. Black is a hundred. Different rooms use different colors but that's the pattern.

3. Find the Bathrooms

Do this right now. Walk the room and find where they are. You don't want to be learning this at the worst moment.

4. Know Your Position

5. Buy In for Part of Your Bankroll

6. Don't Talk About Hands During Play
